Product Information

This Mila Coldseal multipoint door lock features 4 Rollers, 4 Hooks, 1 Deadbolt & 1 Latch.

Mila Coldseal multipoint door locks were very widely specified on residential doors until the mid 2000's. While this classic lock is not part of Mila's current range of UPVC door locks, they are still available, manufactured by the same factory that originally made them in Italy.

Identifying a Coldseal UPVC door lock is easy once the lock is out of the door. The shape of the gearbox is very distinctive, featuring triangular corners. Identifying the lock before it has been removed can be a little more tricky as these locks were rebranded by a number of different door and window companies. The lock may be stamped Mila, but could also have Coldseal on the faceplate. Regardless of the branding, they are all the same lock underneath.

The Coldseal lock features a unique 4 hook and 4 roller configuration. Both the top and bottom pair of hooks throw towards each other. The Coldseal lock is available in either a latch and deadbolt or latch only configuration.

Please note that Coldseal locks were originally made by Avocet. Therefore, if you have "Coldseal" stamped on the faceplate of your lock, be sure to double check that it is Mila as very old versions will not be the same.

Mila gearboxes are available in both latch only and latch and deadbolt configurations, with a double or spindle spindle.

Latch only versions are always single spindle and are available in 25mm, 28mm, 35mm and 45mm backsets. Latch and deadbolt versions with a single spindle (92mm PZ) are available in 35mm and 45mm backsets and double spindles are available with a 35mm backset only. The double spindle lock features a 70mm/ 92mm PZ measurement.

Despite the various backsets and operation options, the dimensions of Mila gearboxes are largely the same. They measure 233mm high by the backset + 20mm wide. The latch measures 20mm high, the deadbolt is 30mm high and there is 80mm between the bottom of the latch and the top of the deadbolt.

Please note that some older locks feature an offset, or cranked connector. This is only an issue when replacing a gearbox, rather than a full length lock, but its an important point to consider. Replacement gearboxes are now only available with inline connectors. They are still compatible with older locks but it will be necessary to adapt the drive gear that runs behind the faceplate. Follow our technical guide on the process, but there is a square hole in the drive gear which needs to be cut to create a slot to ensure that the lock works.

Coldseal hooks are bi-directional, with the top hook moving downwards, and the bottom hook moving upwards in each pair of hooks. Hook cases measure 95mm high by 45mm wide, making them one of the smaller hook cases on the market. If the door routing is tight, this can require work to allow a replacement hook lock to fit.

Rollers are used for compression, to pull the door against the frame, to help prevent dust or water ingress. They do little for security, but they also have the added benefit of helping to prevent the door from becoming warped as it is supported across its full height. This is dependent on the rollers being engaged into their keeps.

Rollers are normally adjustable by 1mm to help achieve optimum weather sealing.

Product FAQs

How can I tell who the manufacturer is of my multipoint lock?

Check down the faceplate and look for a brand name or logo to identify the manufacturer.

How do I find out the operation of my multipoint door lock?

  • 1. If you only use the key to unlock all of the locking points then the operation is called Key Wind.
  • 2. If you lift the handle and turn the key to lock then the operation is called Lift Lever.
  • 3. If from the outside you unlock with the key, pull handle down to disengage the locking points and turn the key to open the door then this operation is called Nightlatch or Split Spindle.
  • 4. If lifting the handle fully locks the door without the use of a key then this operation is called Auto Locking.

How do I measure my multipoint door lock?

Always measure in millimetres.

  • 1. Backset – Measure the distance from the edge of the faceplate back to where the key goes into the door cylinder.
  • 2. Centres – Measure the distance from centre of handle spindle down to where the key goes into the door cylinder.
  • 3. Locking points – Measure the distance from centre of the locking point to the centre of handle spindle then repeat for other locking points.
  • 4. Faceplate – Measure the distance across the width of the face and full length of the faceplate.
  • 5. Gearbox – Measure the height and depth of the gearbox.

How do I know if my multipoint door lock is left or right handed?

99% of multipoint door locks are field reversible, instructions for which are under product information. For those models which are handed please refer to the handing chart to determine which hand you require.
