At Duffells we are constantly adding new products to our range. More multipoint gearboxes are available than ever and the purpose of this guide is to highlight some of the most interesting.

Background

Gearboxes are the most likely point of failure on a multipoint lock and they are the area most likely damaged when forced. Often, replacing the gearbox can give a multipoint lock many more years of service.

You can find our entire range of gearboxes here!

5 reasons to swap a gearbox:

1. A gearbox swap on most locks, takes a few minutes, and normally requires only a few screws.

2. Gearboxes are often less than half the price of a full lock.

3. They are much more convenient to transport than a full lock and can easily be stored on the van.

4. One gearbox can fit hundreds of different multipoint locks from the same manufacturer.

5. Gearboxes are now available to repair old locks, which are no longer made.

It’s worth noting that manufacturers don’t recommend replacing gearboxes and won’t warrant them once fitted to an old strip. Nevertheless, they have proved to be incredibly popular.

Here are 3 of our favourite new gearboxes:

Fix logo

FIX

The Fix range is very popular here in the UK, however, unless it’s one of the standard versions it can be a difficult one to source as many were made to measure and produced to order.

A full length made to measure can take 4-6 weeks to manufacture, so we stock the 55/72 gearbox to quickly repair old locks.

Changing a Fix gearbox is straightforward. Undoing 3 Screws will release the gearbox, which can be reassembled in a few minutes. Be sure to re-engage the drive rods.

Winkhaus Av2

The Winkhaus AV2 lock is one of the most popular automatic multipoint locks in the UK. We see thousands of these on new doors and, despite being high quality, the gearboxes do fail.

We stock replacement AV2 gearboxes in 35mm, 45mm and 55mm backsets. The AV2 lock features offset hooks, which means that the gearboxes are handed. It’s important to ensure that you order the correct handed gearbox. The easiest way to do that is use the handing chart on the website.

To replace the gearbox, knock out the top and bottom rivets and remove the centre screw.

GU Ferco Latch only (70PZ)

In recent years the popular GU Ferco latch only 70pz locks changed gearbox design. Early models did not have removable gearboxes but since 2020, gearboxes can now be changed.
